The enduring value of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue as a regional security institution was underlined as it was held for the eleventh time in Singapore from 1 to 3 June 2012. The President of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono gave the opening keynote address, in which he said that the Shangri-La Dialogue 'has made a significant contribution to the strengthening of peace and cooperation in our region and beyond.' John Chipman, IISS Director-General and Chief Executive, noted that in past years 'many initiatives have been taken at this summit, and numerous agreements signed here, helping to build defence relationships, confidence and trust.' Chipman announced the signing of a new memorandum of understanding with the government of Singapore under which the IISS would organise the Shangri-La Dialogue at least until 2019, and would also boost its research activities in Asia-Pacific security, including through the appointment of two Shangri-La Senior Fellows.
