In Hostage Nation, authors Victoria Bruce, Karin Hayes and Jorge Enrique Botero provide a journalistic account of Colombia's tumultuous recent past. While the book's title suggests a focus on the US-led war on drugs, its main subject is the long-standing and doctrinaire Marxist guerrilla organisation, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), and its deep involvement in kidnapping and narcotics trafficking. The book started out as a narrower account of FARC commander Simon Trinidad's trial in a US court in autumn 2006, but quickly turned into a broad exploration of FARC's historical roots, ideology and current military and political operations.
