In September 2010, the Colombian military unleashed a ferocious raid against the second-in-command and chief military strategist of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), Victor Julio Suarez, known universally by his second nom de guerre, Mono Jojoy. Employing 30 planes, 27 helicopters and more than 30 tonnes of explosives (includ-ing 50 predsion-guided munitions), Operation Sodom ended in the death of the most feared man in the country, wanted for over 100 separate crimes.1 Colombian Defence Minister Rodrigo Rivera characterised Jojoy's 300-metre-long hideout as 'the mother of all FARC camps' equipped with Viet-Cong-like tunnels and escape routes. President Juan Manuel Santos ebulliently called the strike a 'turning point' and 'the beginning of the end for the FARC'
