Some months ago, White House officials took pains to indicate that a number of foreign-policy leaders within the Obama administration, including the president himself, were approaching key Afghan policy decisions under the influence of Gordon M. Goldstein's recent book Lessons in Disaster, which examines former US National Security Advisor McGeorge Bundy's role in shaping US policy during the Vietnam War.
