China faced a critical moment after the death of Mao Zedong. The so-called Gang of Four, the radical Cultural Revolution elite led by Madame Mao, had been arrested in a bloodless coup, and a new leader, a relatively junior party official named Hua Guofeng, hand-picked by Mao on his deathbed in 1975, was in place. Although Hua's rise to power owed much to the Cultural Revolution, he decided to form a tactical alliance with the senior communist veterans who had been victimised by Mao's incessant purges and who had never been happy with Mao's theory and practice of 'continuous revolution'. The ten-year Cultural Revolution had wrought havoc on the entire party and the state machine.
