This is a very impressive book, not just in terms of its dimensions, but also its erudition (its bibliography runs to 170 pages) and ambition, and the liveliness and pugnacity with which it presents its interpretations. It might fairly be said, however, that it fails to fulfil the programme announced by its title. One is tempted to suggest that it should be called An Anthropological Perspective on Western History.
