Jack Matlock served for 35 years in the American Foreign Service. His book reminds us just how good America's professional diplomats can be. Two previous books, Autopsy on an Empire, followed by Reagan and Gorbachev: How the Cold War Ended, provide rich and wise accounts of the Soviet collapse. Matlock was intimately involved, as a member of Reagan's National Security Council and as US Ambassador to the Soviet Union. His analysis is assiduously non-triumphal.
