摘要

The Yacoubian building is a Cairo landmark that Alaa al Aswany, a novelist and part-time dentist, uses as the setting for his complex novel about contemporary life in Egypt. Read alongside Bradley's book, it deepens one's understanding of the harshness of urban life in Egypt, while reminding readers that life goes on nevertheless. The characters represent a cross-section of society: the ageing manipulative businessman and his scheming, frustrated sister; the grasping and unscrupulous gangster and aspiring politician; the poor shopgirl, exploited at work and at home; a pair of artful-dodger brothers, trying to enlarge their minis-cule shanty; and the disappointed Islamist. This dramatis personae implies that the book is a mere Dickensian comedy of manners. It is more than this.
