It is interesting that this book, written by a scholar who teaches at the University of Oklahoma, reverses the debate launched in the 1980s, when Japan-bashers in the United States were attacking Japan's unwillingness to embrace liberal economic principles at home and abroad. Yoon Wook Lee thinks that the Japanese actually got their revenge after the Cold War, when Anglo-American triumphalism fed Western calls for a neoliberal world order. By 'bringing the state back in' to economic development in the mid 1980s, Japan made a deliberate effort to challenge the neoliberal orthodoxy. This is the 'Japanese challenge' of the title, which the author believes was 'aimed at undermining U.S.-led neoliberal attempts to delegitimate the role of the state in economic development'.
