The 60th Anniversary Summit of the NATO Alliance gave significant attention to the problem of Afghanistan. The Barack Obama administration has made Afghanistan the centrepiece of its struggle to fight international terrorism. Along the way, it has underscored the importance of solidarity within NATO to the transatlantic relationship as a whole. During the run-up to the summit, pundits worried that the European members of NATO would have too little to offer in response to calls for more troops, money and equipment; the implication - often made explicit - was that NATO would falter if the United States were to come away empty-handed.
