Known simply as 'Lula', Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has captured the imagination of individuals throughout the world. Indeed, Lula's rags-to-riches life story 'reads like a film script', as the promotional blurb on the cover of Lula of Brazil puts it. In this comprehensive account of Lula's life and career, Richard Bourne describes how a poor shoe-shine boy became the president of Latin America's largest country. He provides interesting and engaging details of Lula's childhood and youth, including depictions of Lula's shyness as a child, his troubled relationship with his father, and the death of his first wife and unborn child. Lula reluctantly became a union leader as a young adult, eventually playing a key role in creating Brazil's first workers' party - the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT).
