摘要

In this highly original academic work, Johns Hopkins political scientist Francisco E. Gonzalez reminds us that democratic transitions are often in fact 'dual transitions' in that they encompass distinct processes of political liberalisation and economic reform. One need only consider China's long-developing and extraordinarily dynamic economic transition and far less active political evolution to see the value of looking at transitions in this way.rnGonzalez focuses on two fascinating cases, Mexico and Chile, to see why their respective dual transitions occurred in a relatively peaceful and stable manner while so many of their Latin American counterparts suffered hyperinflation and widespread violence during their own moves towards democracy and economic reform.
