The ongoing American-led counter-insurgency campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan have led many analysts and strategists to return to the Vietnam War to learn what to do (and what not to, depending on one's emphasis) in current conflicts. Yet, in his excellent and very timely book, Crossroads to Intervention, Todd Greentree shows that the Vietnam War is not the most recent conflict to which analysts could turn. America's seemingly forgotten involvement in Central America's bloody civil wars and revolutions during the 1980s was itself an education in nation-building and counter-insurgency in violent, lawless regions. Given the searing and instructive nature of these episodes, it is surprising that the US military - in addition to the American public - continues to neglect them: the Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual, published to so much fanfare at the height of the Iraqi insurgency in late 2006, entirely skips over American efforts in Central America during the 1980s.
