Around the time of Columbus, Easter Island had a population in five figures, with a vibrant culture represented by the giant statues for which the island is best known. Two hundred years later, the population, and many of the statues, had plummeted. In the mid-1980s, Rwanda was a country at peace, with a rising standard of living. Ten years later, it was gutted by civil war and genocide. In the 1980s, the Soviet Union was a superpower; ten years later, it was in the dustbin of history.
