From the transport economy to sustainable mobility: what role should innovations play?

In the late 60s in Lyon a research team was created out of the hard work of several ambitious colleagues (Mr. Bernadet, A. Bonnafous, S. Wickam and others); ten years later this research team would later become the Transport Economy Laboratory (Laboratoire d'economie des transports, LET). After nearly 40 years, the LET, now under the direction of Charles Raux, today counts more than 30 scientists and research professors affiliated with one of the three organizations that the Lab is affiliated with, the CNRS (the French National Scientific Research Center, Centre national de la recherche scientifique), ENTPE (the French National School for Public Works, École nationale des Travaux Publics de l'État) and Université Lyon 2. The place it holds in the world of transportation research more than explains its inclusion in this special edition for the ITS Conference in Lyon. Along with other organizations (IFSTTAR, Pôle de compétitivité LUTB, PST Rhône-Alpes, Institut Carnot) it constitutes the transport skills and knowledge cluster in the greater Lyon region. From the outset, LET's skills have been focused on economic calculations and evaluations as well as modeling.%Ala fin des années 60, naissait à Lyon, grâce aux initiatives de quelques collègues ambitieux pour leur université (M. Bernadet, A. Bonnafous, S. Wickham...), l'équipe de recherche qui allait devenir 10 ans plus tard le Laboratoire d'économie des transports (LET). Après plus de 40 années d'existence, aujourd'hui sous la direction de Charles Raux, le LET compte plus de 30 chercheurs et enseignants-chercheurs rattachés à l'une ou l'autre de ses trois tutelles : le CNRS, l'ENTPE (École nationale des Travaux Publics de l'État) et l'Université Lyon 2. Sa présence reconnue au sein du monde de la recherche dans les transports explique pourquoi il figure dans ce numéro spécial édité à l'occasion de la conférence ITS de Lyon. Avec d'autres (IFSTTAR, Pôle de compétitivité LUTB, PST Rhône-Alpes, Institut Carnot...), il fait partie du pôle de compétences en transport de l'agglomération lyonnaise. Les compétences spécifiques du LET se sont dès l'origine tournées vers le calcul et l'évaluation économiques mais aussi vers la modélisation.
