A Grant Success Story: The Craft of the Japanese Woodworker

In a recent example of a successful grant activity, two of my eighth-grade classes learned a little bit about traditional Japanese woodworking in a project I called "The Art and Craft of the Japanese Woodworker." The Mid-Hudson Teacher Center funded the project. The center's grant covered the cost of materials (wood and finishes) for over 30 boxes, plus several necessary hand tools. Students built toolboxes fashioned after one used by Toshio Odate, a noted woodworker, sculptor, and teacher. Odate used his toolbox during an apprenticeship in Japan in the years following World War II. My students have told me they use their boxes to store such items as remote-control plane accessories, ballet "stuff," and other personal belongings. We worked with plans published in American Woodworker magazine, with the box's dimensions altered a bit so that we could use standard-dimension lumber.
