Treated wood isn't termite-proof but it is termite-resistant. Even so, recent concerns about the environmental impact of preservative chemicals used to treat wood drove U.S. Dept. of Agriculture researchers to look for a better way to provide termite resistance to wood. It's always been known that certain woods contain allelochemials which act as repellents, and even toxicants, against certain insects, including termites. The chemicals are found in the heartwood but it wasn't known if cut boards contained enough of the repellent chemicals to have an effect on termite feeding.
