This is not an invader that you see very often but when you encounter it, it's memorable. Amphipods, sometimes called scuds, are not insects, they're small crustaceans. They even look like miniature shrimp. Most are marine, some live in fresh water, and a few live on land or in the zone between land and water. For example, one group called sand fleas (or beach fleas), is found under seaweed or stones on beaches. Those that live in fresh water are sometimes called sideswimmers. So what are they doing on land inside buildings?
