The third edition of this title has been fully updated to reflect the modern workforce and workplace. The book follows a progression from supervision of individuals, through group management to broader organizational leadership, laying out the skills and knowledge needed to effectively lead people in a variety of contexts. The chapters relating to supervision of individuals are robust and provide step by step guidance. As the text moves toward group management, the issues are more complex and the solutions less predictable. Unfortunately, the checklists and examples are less useful, but the author does a good job of providing a broader discussion of strategies. Also, the book features discussions of generational differences and the importance of diversity and inclusion, making it immediately applicable and relevant to a current work setting. Additionally, the author provides consideration for workplace circumstances such as unions, faculty status, and tenure, rendering the advice applicable in a variety of library settings.
