Multimaterial filaments and an additive manufacturing (AM) process that can be used to convert them into functioning electronic devices that can light-up, sense their surroundings, store energy, or fulfil other functions, have been developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA. The filaments have a complex internal structure comprising different electronic materials arranged in a precise configuration, which is encapsulated in a polymer cladding. A fused deposition modelling (FDM) machine with a specially designed nozzle is used to produce parts from these filaments.
