Imbed Biosciences of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, USA, is enhancing its silver-coating technology with the addition of gallium ions to provide improved antibacterial efficacy for wound dressings used to treat severe burns and diabetic skin ulcers. The addition of gallium ions aims to improve the dressing's antimicrobial efficacy against biofilms that can shield bacteria from antibiotics. Imbed Biosciences Vice President, Research and Development Gaurav Pranami said the company has carried out fundamental research to formulate the design principles for pairing silver ions with gallium. He explained that the bacteria in biofilms require iron for their metabolic activities. Since gallium and iron are similar in ionic radii and charge, bacteria will take-up gallium. However, gallium cannot be reduced by the bacteria like iron, so they atrophy and the biofilm breaks-up.This renders the bacteria in and underlying the biofilm more vulnerable to the silver.
