A new technology acquired by the Freudenberg Group of Weinheim, Germany, could create applications for advanced nonwovens in automotive powertrain and chassis components, particularly in electric vehicles. Freudenberg has purchased the activities of Frictins, a start-up company based in Wolnzach, Germany. Frictins has developed a hard-particle coating that, when applied to a special nonwoven from Freudenberg, can be used to increase the coefficient of friction of a variety of surfaces by up to a factor of eight. This enables the design of lightweight and compact shaft and hub connections, screw mountings and flange joints that can transmit torque and shear forces that are up to five times higher than is possible using conventional technologies.
