Two countries in the European Union (EU) are supporting a standard for assessing the flushability of wet wipes according to its developers, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry (INDA) and EDANA. When mixed with fat from food in sewer systems, non-flushable wipes can agglomerate into large masses known as fatbergs, which cause blockages. Key provisions of the fourth edition of the Guidelines for Assessing the Flushability of Disposable Nonwoven Products (GD4), which contains test methods and strict pass/fail criteria to determine if a wipe can be marketed as flushable, have now been adopted by Belgian and Spanish authorities.
