A surgical mask coated with a thin layer of copper that rapidly deactivates bacteria and viruses - including the SARS-Cov-2 virus responsible for the human coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic - has been launched by HeiQ of Zurich, Switzerland.Called MetalliQ, the IIR-class mask is coated with the metal using a vapour-deposition process (MetalliX, previously known as XViroblock) developed by Xefco of Lilyfield, New South Wales, Australia.Testing conducted by the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute) in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, has shown that fabrics coated using MetalliX technology deactivate the SARS-Cov-2 virus in as little as five minutes.HeiQ's silver-ion and lipid-based finish, called Viroblock NPJ03 and launched in March 2020(1), has been proven to reduce the infectivity of SARS-Cov-2 by 99.99%(2)after 30 minutes.HeiQ says that NPJ03 has been shown to inactivate Sendai virus within 2-5 minutes, but the opportunity to test its efficacy against SARS-Cov-2 was, and still is, very limited.With MetalliX, however, it was able to carry-out tests that proved the efficacy of the coating after shorter intervals of time.
