Ahlstrom-Munksjoe plans to manufacture and sell separators based on technology from Soteria Battery Innovation Group (BIG) for lithium-ion batteries following the signing of a marketing licence agreement by the two companies.Soteria BIG of Greenville, South Carolina, USA, is a consortium of companies set-up to promote the safety benefits of batteries made using the Dreamweaver separator and Soteria metallised film current collectors(1). Developed by Dreamweaver of Greenville, the separator incorporates thermally stable nanofibres in a non-woven matrix to enhance the safety of lithium-ion batteries.When penetrated, conventional plastic separators can melt and shrink, leaving holes between the anode and cathode that can lead to short circuits.This in turn can cause overheating and even fires. By contrast, Dreamweaver's materials do not shrink significantly even at temperatures of up to 300°C.
