Recent media reports of the negative impact of plastic waste, including fragments from synthetic fibres, in the oceans continue to generate a mountain of adverse publicity and have led to calls for farranging action to be taken against the materials. Together with press stories about so-called "fatbergs"-huge agglomerations of wet wipes, other fibrous disposables and fat that cause blockages in sewers demanding expensive and time-consuming remedial action - consumers have spent much of 2018 being confronted with the undesirable aspects of our growing reliance on synthetic fibres.
