Richard Horrocks, a Professor in the Institute for Materials Research and Innovation at the University of Bolton, UK, and Chair of the Fire & Materials Group of the London, UK-based Society of Chemical Industry (SCI), presented the 15~(th) Ivan Levinstein Memorial Lecture in October 2016 in Bolton, addressing the topic of the role of technical textiles in fire protection. In a dramatic illustration of the importance of the topic, he began by telling the audience that the collapse of the World Trade Center buildings following the terrorist attacks in the USA on 9 September 2001 had resulted from textile-fuelled fires that had generated heat fluxes in excess of 100 kW.m~(-2).
