It is widely acknowledged that for wearable technology to break through into the mass market, against what to date has frankly been indifference, it must become fully integrated into everyday wear. Rather than the development of further waves of devices and add-ons, what is needed is comfortable and practical clothing that can add useful functionality, such as the real-time collection of data concerning the wearer's health or athletic performance. Several recent developments provide examples of where the smart textiles sector is headed and what it needs to do to succeed.
