Performance nonwovens, recycled fibres and the Middle East

Many magazines traditionally devote their first editorial of a new year to attempting to predict the significant changes that will take place in the industries they represent. This editorial will not buck that trend, but it will begin by looking back to a recent, potentially significant event from last year. As Adrian Wilson reports (see also, Recycling carbon fibre is no longer simply a burning issue, pages 11-16), series production of the BMW i3, which began in September 2013, can be seen as a defining moment in the history of the development and use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic composites. This article touches on some of the hurdles that have yet to be jumped if we are all to look forward to buying cars made from composites, including the creation of a large capacity for producing carbon fibres, and the ability to recycle and re-use these highly valuable materials at the end of the life of the vehicle. (Recycling of carbon fibre is an important topic for our industry and one we will return to in the next issue when James Bakewell will explore the existing technologies in some detail.)
