There is an accelerated growth of bacteria on clothing that covers areas of the body where three things are found: a food source, such as dead skin; heat; moisture. Consequently, shoes, boots, socks and hosiery are ideal incubators for odour-causing bacteria and ideal candidates for antimicrobial treatment. This is particularly true in the military. Soldiers on active duty in hot, humid climates, such as those in the Middle East and Asia, can go days without removing their socks and boots.The result can be significant build-up of unhealthy, odour-causing bacteria.To prevent this unwanted bacterial growth, military leaders around the world are specifying antimicrobial performance for the boots and socks they supply to their troops.
