Donaldson is acknowledged as a pioneer in the electrospinning of nanofibre layers for addition to filter media, creating Ultra-Web media for diesel engines and the Spider-Web range for gas turbines. The company makes its nanofibres using proprietary electro-spinning processes, which it has developed and enhanced since the 1970s. Using several production machines, it claims to make tens-of-thousands of square metres of electrospun polyamide (PA) nanofibre filter media a day. Although these media are extremely fine and have an average weight of just 0.05 g.rrr2, such that a million square metres of these webs weighs only about 50 kg, this level of production is impressive.
