As the US military scales-back operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is also scaling-back its purchasing, including that for vast amounts of US-produced fabrics for a wide range of end-uses. As a result, manufacturers are preparing for the loss of orders. There will always be a need for military fabrics to maintain stockpiles, they say, but there could still be a significant impact on the industry over the next few years. Manufacturers will continue to develop lightweight, functional fabrics, but probably not at the frantic pace of the past two decades.
