Bloengineers At HarvardrnUniversity in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA claim to have developed a practical technology for fabricating nanofibres at production speeds far in excess of current methods.rnThe team's Mohammad Reza Badrossamay describes the equipment used as a cross between a high-speed centrifuge and a candy floss machine. The device uses a rotating drum and nozzle to spin, stretch and push out polymer-based threads that have diameters of 100 nm.rnThe researchers have filed a patent on their discovery, first reported in the online edition of Nano Letters, a publication of the American Chemical Society. Coauthor Kit Parker adds that this approach is vastly superior to making nanofibres with conventional techniques, particularly as the production output is "many times greater".
