In the last issue of TechnicalTextiles International (September 2010, Nanotechnology activity continues its strong surge worldwide, pages 11 -16), I examined the way nanofibres are resulting in a vast range of new product possibilities, primarily as a result of their very high surface areas and superior mechanical properties. Similar progress is being made with new coating formulations and processing techniques-again largely involving nanotechnology. These are widening the possibilities of imparting an unlimited range of functionalities to textile substrates, or fibre-reinforced composite parts - whatever their intended end-use - with both enhanced effectiveness and pinpoint accuracy.
