Recycled polyester is a fairly recent concept for the Indian market. Since it was introduced in the 1990s,around 10-15 companies have ventured into this segment, continuously expanding their capacities as they realize the growing market potential. Capacity for recycled polyester in India is now about 240 kt a year and has been growing annually at a rate of 15-20%. As such, today recycled material accounts for around 25-30% of the total production of polyester fibre (which is about 875 kt a year); in contrast, as recently as three to five years ago the share of recycled fibre was only 10-15% of the total.
