Emergency workers and military personnel charged with cleaning up chemical warfare agents and toxic chemicals have a new tool to call on: a decontamination wipe developed by researchers at The Institute of Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH) at Texas Tech University, USA. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has evaluated the performance of the non-woven dry wipe, called Fiber-tect~(TM), with mustard gas and other toxic chemicals, finding that the product out-performed 30 different decontamination materials, according to Texas Tech University. Fibertect has an activated carbon core sandwiched between an absorbent layer on the top and the bottom, said the supervisor at the Nonwovens and Advanced Materials Laboratory at Texas Tech, Seshadri Ram-kumar. With scientists at the Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr National Program for Counter-measures to Biological and Chemical Threats, Ramkumar worked to create a product that will be useful to the military and US homeland security efforts. The US Department of Defense (DoD) funded the programme.
