Despite the many advantages of standard polypropylene and polyester with respect rnto the processing of nonwovens, efforts continue globally to replace them with rnalternatives such as bioplastics or natural fibres, writes Adrian Wilson.rnPolypropylene (PP) remains the most important fibre for nonwovens production. In Europe alone, more than 800 kt of PP - in staple fibre or polymer chip form - is consumed by the nonwovens industry annually-representing almost 50% of all of its manufactured output.rnSpunmelt (extrusion) nonwovens technology - and, in particular, the industry-standard Reifenhauser Reicofil sytem -was initially developed primarily to accommodate the processing parameters of PP, resulting in unprecedented output and running speeds, as well as the highest quality, low-weight products. Systems for extruding polyester (PET) into non-woven webs have also been developed in recent years.
