Breakthrough technologies are seldom perfected from their very start, but time and trial often solve many initial shortcomings. Such was the case with polyurethane reactive hot-melt adhesives (PURHMs), adopted several years ago by textile laminators seeking environmentally friendly, solvent-free adhesives for their high-performance adhesive-bonded textile laminates. PURHMs certainly met environmental requirements, but fell somewhat short in the areas of end-use properties and application versatility. Recent advances in polymer technology and formulating, however, have allowed the development of flexible products designed to bring the improved performance requirements desired by the textile industry. Such advances are enabling textile laminators to enjoy a new, all-around level of superior performance without the compromise previously associated with solvent-free adhesives.
