Demand for fibers continues to grow globally, with only man-made fibers still able to keep pace. Globally, demand increased by +6.6%, with synthetic (polyacrylonitrile, polyamide, polyester etc.) and cellulosic man-made fibers (viscose, modal, lyocell, etc.) all contributing equally. Chemical fiber production +2.1 % According to data published by the IVC - Industrievereinigung Chemiefaser e.V., Frankfurt/Germany, global chemical fiber production in 2017 was 71.6 million tons. Western Europe accounted for 2.86 million tons of which 655,000 tons were produced in Germany (2016: 641,000 tons). In Germany demand for all fibers rose by 1.3 %, with applications in the technical area increasing significantly by +3.5%. The home textiles segment stabilized at +1.4%, whereas the processing of fibers for clothing declined by 4.1 %. In percentage terms, the latter decrease was mainly at the expense of cotton processing, whereas wool as a raw material for clothing enjoyed a significant increase in popularity. Chemical fibers have found their place in specialized clothing areas and were hardly affected by this trend.
