Unlike natural fibers, which are intertwined during spinning, the production of yarns made of polymers like polyamide (PA) and polyester (PET) is based on melt spinning where liquid plastic is extruded. After curing, the "endless yarn" is spooled and can later be cut into staple fibers and processed into bales. During re-spooling for weaving or knitting, automatic cleaners check yarns for irregularities and flaws, removing any defects. In order to mend defects and create continuous threads, most winding machines connect directly to automatic splicing devices that can fuse loose ends firmly and homogeneously. To achieve this, the individual filaments are interlaced through the use of compressed air. In contrast to knots, the uniform, compact splicing connections produce no noticeable thickening and do not impair further processing at all. This enables higher processing speeds, improves spool structure, and reduces the number of filament and thread breaks in subsequent processes.
