Innovative weaving technology for the integral fabrication of complex customized implants

Within the scope of the IGF-funded research project, the ITM has succeeded in developing a CAD-supported process chain for the transfer of patient data into complex woven tubular implant structures. Due to beneficial developments in structural and weave design as well as engineering advancements in the field of jacquard shuttle weaving technology, complex stent grafts can be manufactured in integral design. Their compliance with required standards for the approval of stent graft implants and their high complexity in terms of different diameters, windows, and the Y-branch shape, show the great medical and technical potential of these integrally manufactured structures. The solutions derived from these results include the generation of control programs for weaving machines from 3D CAD data sets as well as the integral fabrication with high reproducibility. Hence, SMEs in the textile industry are enabled to flexibly develop medically relevant, highly complex implant and prosthesis structures, as well as innovative products, e.g. for com- pression and muscle support in the sports and leisure sectororthe integration of sensory and actuator components in composites.
