Polyelectrolyte multilayers on textiles as a reservoir for cosmetic and pharmaceutical agents

The direct delivery of active compounds from textiles to the skin shows promise for a number of tasks and is already established for different medical and cosmetic applications, e.g. wound dressings and different cosmeto-textiles. As part of an IGF research project, the German Textile Research Centre North-West gGmbH (DTNW), Krefeld, the Scientific Institute of the Research Association for the Cosmetic Industry e.V., Holzminden, and the Clinic of Dermatology, University Hospital Jena examined the release of active compounds from polyelectrolyte multilayers on textiles. This type of delivery system exhibits different advantages compared to known technologies (microencapsulation, cyclodextrin complexation), e.g. the potential for a reload and the capability to accommodate structurally diverse cargo molecules. Our studies provided important information with regard to an industrial use of such systems and demonstrated their safety in cytotoxicity tests. Moreover, in a proof of concept study, the delivery of a skin-tanning agent (dihydroxyacetone) was successfully achieved in volunteer studies using different textile carriers.
