The annual Global Outlook Conference for carbon fibers GOCarbonFibre 2017, organized by Smithers Rapra, Shrewsbury/UK, from October 11-12, 2017 in Munich/Germany attracted nearly 120 participants. In 20 high quality lectures, attendees received market outlook and information about new developments along the carbon fiber chain from precursor manufacturing to recycling, from composite production to new applications. In his lecture, Daniel Pichler from CarbCon-sult GmbH, Hofheim/Germany, gave a short market overview. In 2016, global carbon fiber demand was about 70,000 tons. Thereof 65% were 1-24k carbon fiber and 35% were heavy tow (50k) carbon fiber. With 14,000 tons, the aerospace industry was the largest consumer followed by wind energy (13,000 tons), automotive (12,000 tons) and sports (9,000 tons). The trend for growth of the carbon fiber market is expected to remain strong in the range of +8 to +14% in the next years, resulting in a demand of 100,000-115,000 tons carbon fibers in 2020 and 150,000-200,000 tons in 2025. The highest growth potential is seen in the automotive sector followed by industrial applications and the wind power industry.
