Demographic change describes the changes within the structure of a population and considers natality, mortality rate, and migration. Signs of developed societies are a low birth rate, a higher mortality rate, and a high life expectancy; through this the number of older people in relation to younger people increases. Low-developed countries show reverse ratios, the share of the young population exceeds that of the older population. Usually the age pattern of a state's population changes with increasing educational level and prosperity towards the first case. In Germany the birth rate has been lower than the mortality rate since the 1970s, and the population has been decreasing. Parallel to an increase in life expectancy, the number of older citizens in Germany is increasing. The annual immigration rate has exceeded emigration by 100,000-200,000 individuals. For 2015 and 2016 the immigration ratio is likely to be higher due to refugees and the expected family reunions related to them. Both their qualification and integration are essential social responsibilities. The rejuvenating effect resulting from the - on average - younger immigrants can not, however, put a stop to the ageing of the total population in Germany. Numerous problems such as high health insurance costs, breakdown of the social security system, lack of manpower, and shrinking economic performance derive from this. First, however, it should be observed that a society whose birth rate decreases and whose life expectancy increases shows signs of a high state of development! This creates confidence: sufficient potential for a sustainably-positive development of our society should be there. What does this precisely mean for the technical textile industry?
