"Made in Germany" no longer implies that something is produced in German factories. In a world characterized by global value chains, the manifold social and ecological challenges associated with wealth creation are shared by a myriad of producers, suppliers, and buyers. To uphold good corporate governance in such a globalized world, it is essential to promote the core labor standards of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in value chains and production networks. A good example is Bangladesh: over the last years, the local garment sector has become not only a core aspect of the national economy, but emerged as the second biggest garment production site globally. About 80% of Bangladesh's export revenue comes from the garment sector, employing about 4.2 million workers, 80% of which are women. This rapid growth has had some serious consequences in terms of labor and safety standards. Low wages, a lack of safety protocols in factories, and limited worker rights were the result of an industry focused on making a contribution to employment and export earnings.
