The agrotextile OEkolys from the supplier of textile solutions Beaulieu Technical Textiles NV, Kruishoutem/Belgium, has won the Techtextil Innovation Award 2013 in the category "New Applications". The OEkolys agrotextile is the first woven biodegradable and com-postable landscape fabric, certified "OK compost". OEkolys is a groundcover based on 2 biopolymers, one biodegradable and the other compostable. It ensures weed control for young plants, which is crucial for the first 3 years of life. After the functional period of 3 years, OEkolys fragments, then biodegrades, finally becoming food for the protected plant. After its period of use, OEkolys returns to the organic chain, closing the carbon cycle.
