In their beginnings, spacer preforms were manufactured from glass fiber/polypropylene (GF-PP) measuring 900 × 900 × 30 mm. Later, procedures were developed to assemble these single spacer preforms into macro-structures. The robot-assisted, one-side sewing technique allowed the parallel and vertical arrangement of these single structures and also the adjustment at angles. Thus large complex structures can be fabricated. Programs for the automatic integration of inserts have been developed for CNC-con-trolled sewing machines and sewing techniques have been tested. To continue this research, it is necessary to develop and test textile sewn free-form surfaces, which are used in vehicle front modules for example, taking thereby account of process safety, quality assurance and repro-ducibility.
