During the first 6 months of 2008 sales of the Automotive Systems division of Rieter Holding Ltd., Winterthur/Switzerland, decreased by 6% to CHF 1.14 billion and operating profit (Ebit) by 61% to only CHF 18.6 million. Rieter reported higher sales in the commercial vehicle sector in Europe, but sales for passenger cars were flat. In North America, Automotive Systems was unable to escape the effects of the adverse market environment despite being strongly placed with the Japanese manufacturers. Rieter Automotive recorded strong growth in the emerging economies. The Automotive Systems division maintained its overall position in this difficult market environment. Investments increased by 1% to CHF 39 million and the number of employees increased by 2% to 9,900.
