In the past few years, the main focuses within the textile industry in Western Europe have shifted considerably. Whilst apparel textiles to a large extent lost their market shares to Asian suppliers and home textile at best stagnated, technical textiles have considerably increased in importance due to their broad product and application range: in Germany the share of technical textiles has reached almost 50% of total textile production. At congresses and trade fairs, numerous new product developments have been presented in the past months, whereby functionality, productivity, energy efficiency and, increasingly, also sustainability were at the forefront. The already available technological diversity makes the combination from properties to multi-functionality possible. Above all the nonwovens industry offers almost endless possibilities here. "Applications look for their nonwovens," according to Ulrich Hornfeck (Sandier AG) at the Hof Nonwovens Congress.
