According to Chapter 1, the term Future-Oriented Technology Analysis is intended to be an umbrella term for the work carried on by several futures-oriented communities, in particular, technology forecasting, technology assessment, futures studies generally, and innovation studies. The book itself comes from a series of biennial seminars sponsored by the Joint Research Center Institute for Technological Prospective Studies (JRC-ITPS) of the European Commission. One key point is that the focus is not on technology perse, but on the interactions between technology and society. Among the issues for FTA practitioners is demonstrating to decision makers and policy makers that FTA really has something to offer. However, I have to note that this is nothing new. It has been a problem since I entered the field in the mid-1960s.
